Why is my hard drive clicking or clunking? By Don Anderson

Every week we receive phone calls about hard drives making strange clicking or clunking noises. This is the most common problem in hard drive failures. Usually a drive has been dropped or banged a clicking sound can be heard after and windows will no longer recognize the hard drive.

So what causes the hard drive to click?

On a hard disk drive, the click of death refers to a similar phenomenon; the head actuator may click or knock as the drive repetitively tries to recover from one or more errors. These sounds can be the heads repetitively loading or unloading, or they can be the sounds of the actuator striking a stop, or both. The click of death can signal the hard drive has crashed or failed.

Usually a bad read/wright head causes the click of death although other problems could be the cause as well like firmware. A do it yourself recovery is a very bad idea when dealing with a clicking hard drive. Many rumors and "fixes" are all over the net like switching out the controller board, freezing, banging, and so on. This can all destroy the drive and any chances of a successful recovery. The board can not be switched on hard drives without the firmware being reprogrammed as well. Only old maxtor drives can take a straight board swap.

Clicking hard drives almost always require a level 3 clean room recovery. Your best option is to store the drive safely, until you are ready to have a professional recover the data. A small percentage of drives that have surface damage "platter damage" on the service area are deemed unrecoverable from any company despite any claim they may make on some too good to be true odds of success. The typical time frame of a level 1 or 2 recovery is within 48 hours. The typical time frame of a level 3 recovery is 1-3 weeks. These are accurate, reliable, and honest answers to your questions.

“I started making calls about the clicking drive and even brought it to several computer repair shops. I was repeatedly told there was nothing anyone could do for it...”

Secure Erase download below free hdd erase software
User data is left on disk drives removed from computers and storage systems, creating a data security vulnerability that many users are unaware of. Recent Federal and state laws requiring secure erasure of user data expose companies to fines of $250,000 and responsible parties to imprisonment for 10 years. Complete eradication of user data off drives can be accomplished by running data Secure Erasure utilities such as the freeware "HDDerase" downloadable above.

It executes the Federally-approved (NIST 800-88) Secure Erase command in the ATA ANSI standard, which is implemented in all recent ATA drives greater than 15-20 GB.
