Common Seagate Failures

Seized spindle

Seagate external drives like the FreeAgent are notorious for seizing. This is normally caused from a drop or sudden hard bang. When the drive is dropped the spindle or "motor" seizes up. This means the drive will no longer spin. If you were to place your ear on the drive and listen while you plug it in you would not hear the drive spin up as normal, but only a faint beeping or buzzing sound can be heard. This is a very difficult recovery and the odds of success are great if the drive is not tampered with. If the drive has been opened or tampered with the recovery chances would be slim to none. The most common solution for this case is removing the platters and placing them in another chasis while keeping the alignment. This is one of the most difficult recoveries to perform.

In most cases this is a good sign that you will need a level 3 recovery to replaced damaged heads. It can also be a seized motor, stiction, dirty heads, or even other problems.

Firmware corruption

Many Seagate drives like the Barracuda 7200.11 models especially are known for firmware issues or bugs. The pending bug or 0LBA bug are a few well known cases. Only special tools like the PC3000 can repair and diagnose firmware issues correctly. One small mistake when working with the drives firmware will hinder it unrecoverable.

Platter damage

seagate platter damage Notice the rings etched in the surface of the platters and the dust on the surface. The dust is from the platters being scraped away from the damaged heads. The dust is what is left of the data on this Seagate drive.

Newer model Seagate drives are very susceptible to platter damage. This usually occurs from powering the drive on many times after a head failure, tinkering from other inexperienced shops or do-it-yourself recoery attempts. Unfortunately, the results from these cases usually end up unrecoverable.

I/O errors data recovery

These issues are very common with Seagate drives. They all point towards bad sectors in a hard drive. Over time the drive can develop weak or bad sectors from age, work load, or abuse. When bad sectors develop special tools are needed to read them for a full recovery. Do not run software on drives that have developed bad sectors. This will beat the drives to death.
